The England international defender has impressed during a loan spell in Italy, but could be welcomed back to Old Trafford over the summer.
Chris Smalling admits he faces an”interesting” choice when it comes to picking between Manchester United and Roma.
The England international will have a massive future call to make in the summer as he is now taking in a season-long loan in Serie A, using a range of impressive performances persuasive Roma that he’d be well worth snapping up on a permanent basis.
United, however, have the choice of welcoming him back into their defensive fold in Old Trafford.
Smalling has hinted he would be amenable to extending his fascination with Italy, having thoroughly enjoyed a new beginning , but nothing was set in stone as yet.
The 30-year-old centre-half told Sky Sports when discussing his choices:”When I first came it was exciting but also daunting because you are not sure what to expect.
“New country, new adventure. But considering how I have settled in, the love I have felt, especially in the fans but everybody in Rome, it’ll be an interesting choice to make.
“Some of the other players said if you really hit the floor running, the love which you could have in this town is incredible. That is what I have felt and so have my loved ones. Long may it last.”
Smalling took the decision to depart Manchester after slipping down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
He’s found the normal game time that he wants at Roma but concedes that anything could happen from this point.”
Smalling added on the uncertainty surrounding his future: “When I talked to them [Roma], it was a case of let’s have a fantastic season, hopefully everything goes to plan, the team is successful and I am successful’ and at the end of the season we will sit down.”
“This was the plan at the beginning of the year and obviously we are not finished yet so come the end of the season we will see exactly what the plan is.”
“I talked to [Solskjaer]… Over the preceding years, I’d been accustomed to playing in virtually every match when fit.
“So to cut this in half, when you look around at other opportunities, there was nothing greater than [Roma] that might have come up.
“We talked publicly and we made it happen.”
