In a typical World Cup year, we would know the winner by now. However, things are a bit different in 2022, with the World Cup taking place toward the close of the year due to the sweltering temperatures in the host nation of Qatar.
With so much to look forward to, and so many stories that are yet to be written, we have a bit of World Cup fever already. So, let’s take a look at some of the best teams to watch out for once the tournament begins.
United States
We’re not saying that the United States is going to win the 2022 Soccer World Cup, but we definitely think they will go a lot further than people anticipate. The Stars and Stripes have qualified for seven consecutive World Cups between 1990 and 2014, yet they have only managed one appearance in the quarter-finals.
However, they have certainly made strides forward, with a number of players featuring on the biggest stage. Chelsea’s Pulisic is one of their high-profile players. They also have Musah at Valencia, Reyna at Borussia Dortmund, McKennie at Juventus, and both Adams and Aaronson of Leeds. They could qualify out of Group B, which sees them face Wales, Iran, and England. While England will be favorites to top the group, there’s no reason why they cannot get the second spot.
Brazil
You may think Brazil is an obvious suggestion, and no doubt they will be one of the favorites for the tournament, however, they haven’t lifted the trophy for two decades now!
Yet, there are reasons to think that they will finally do it this year. Vinicius Jr and Neymar will be leading the line – a deadly combination. They also have players like Paqueta and Selecao, ensuring an entertaining watch. Plus, they have won 14 of their 17 matches during the qualification stages, doing so in a dominant fashion.
Of course, they won’t have it easy, but there is every reason to think Brazil will win their sixth World Cup in Qatar.
The Netherlands
Finally, The Netherlands have never quite done it on the big international stage, but a lot of people believe that 2022 could be the year for them, especially with coach Louis van Gaal back in the hot seat.
From Frenkie de Jong to Virgil van Dijk, there are some incredibly talented players in this team, with many of them proven winners at the highest level. Plus, van Gaal teams are always tactically efficient and well-organized, so there’s no reason to expect any different this time around.
Who do you think will win the 2022 World Cup?
So there you have it: some of the top teams to keep an eye on during this year’s World Cup! What’s your prediction for this year’s tournament in Qatar? One thing is for sure; there are bound to be plenty of surprises along the way.
