Stefano Pioli lined up AC Milan in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Mike Maignan starting in goal behind a back four consisting of left-back Theo Hernandez, centre-backs Alessio Romagnoli and Fikayo Tomori, and right-back Davide Calabria. Ismael Bennacer started as the defensive midfielder alongside Franck Kessie, who was later sent off just 30 minutes after kick-off.
